In March 2022, Bruce Faltynski, an Indiana police officer, and his wife Shelby completed the adoption of their 8-year-old daughter Kaia, fulfilling their lifelong desire to have a child of their own. But they had no idea that it was just the beginning of their road toward having not just one child, but two.
The Department of Child Services (DCS) called them a few weeks after Kaia was officially adopted by them to let them know about a newborn who needed a home. The infant was less than 24 hours old when DCS got in touch with them. In the end, the infant was placed in a safe haven box.
The Indianapolis Star reported that under Indiana’s Safe Haven Law, a person may give up a newborn who is under 30 days old anonymously without worrying about being detained or prosecuted.
The Safe Haven Baby Boxes are a last alternative for moms who want to maintain complete anonymity, while Safe Haven Boxes strives to “prevent illegal abandonment of infants by raising awareness, providing a 24-hour helpline for mothers in trouble.”
In an interview, Shelby said, “The doctor thought maybe less than 24 hours old when she was initially deposited in the safe haven box in Lake County.” “We are really appreciative of Myah’s birth mother; she made a truly brave choice,”
Myah was initially admitted to a hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), where she reportedly experienced a stroke.
Bruce and Shelby legally adopted Myah in November 2022 on Adoption Day in St. Joseph’s County, one of those days that expectant parents eagerly anticipate as they may finally finalize their adoptions in court.
Myah, according to Shelby, is evidence that mothers have numerous alternatives for having kids. But more than that, she said the addition to their family was like a prayer being granted. She continued by expressing the hope that Myah’s mother will see her and her husband as an answer to prayer now that the latter’s daughter has found a home with them.
“I just get the impression that mothers are aware of their options. Myah was undeniably a response to our prayers, and maybe we also answered her mother’s prayers, said Shelby to WLKY News Louisville.
The pair expressed their appreciation for the numerous blessings they have been given.
The pair told, “I think we just feel overwhelmed with thankfulness.” “I believe that is how, yeah it has been a journey of just, you know, giving up our ambitions,” they continued.
The Faltynskis had a protracted wait, but it was unquestionably worthwhile.
